STATE.jpgDemocrat Elaine Beech won a special election for the House of Representatives today, according to unofficial returns.

Beech garnered about 53 percent of the vote for the House District 65 seat, while her Republican opponent, Jerry Reed, tallied 47 percent. Provisional ballots were not yet counted as of Tuesday night.

Beech said she was surprised that the vote was so close in the traditionally Democratic district.

“We’re going to live through it, and I’m going to be the best representative that this District 65 ever had,” Beech said.

The seat became vacant after state Rep. Marc Keahey, D-Grove Hill, was elected to the state Senate in June.
