Original Article: Encyclopedia of Alabama paints state story

historian Wayne Flynt wrote the Web site’s overview es­say, which skims
over hundreds of millions of years.

It includes links to more than 100 other encyclopedia articles on
cotton, coal mining, gold produc­tion, longleaf pine, Mercedes­Benz,
the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival,
Bull Connor, Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Nat “King” Cole, Jesse Owens,
Joe Louis and others.

“It’s so comprehensive,” Kaetz said. “It’s a great launching pad to the rest of the site.”

Starting in 2002, Flynt helped organize the encyclopedia, which went
online in September 2008 with 525 articles. Flynt read every article
beforehand, content editor Claire Wilson recalled.

Flynt said
hundreds of people have suggested topics and written articles, and he
called the encyclo­pedia and its formation “the most extensive
intellectual collabora­tion in the history of Alabama.”
