A Forest Hills Middle School mother died this evening in surgery after she and 10 children were struck by a car this afternoon, police said.
Fairfield Police Chief Pat Mardis did not release the identity of the woman pending family notification.
An injured child also underwent surgery and is in serious but stable condition, Mardis said. The other children were all hospitalized for less serious injuries, and several had gone home as of 8:15 tonight, Mardis said.
A woman in her 60s lost control of her car and collided with the victims while school was getting out around 3 p.m., Mardis said. The driver, whose identity has not been released, had just picked up her grandson. Police said it appeared to be an accident.
The grandson, who was in the car at the time, said his grandmother swerved to avoid children playing in the street when the accident happened.
