Birmingham homicide detectives tonight are investigating their second shooting in four hours.

A woman was taken to UAB Hospital after being shot in the head in the Elyton Village housing community about 7 p.m. Her injury is potentially fatal, according to Sgt. P. Williston of Birmingham’s North Precinct.

Neighbors who did not wish to be identified said they heard a shot, saw a group of people run from a nearby courtyard, and saw the woman on the ground.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses and trying to determine what led to the shooting, Williston said.

In an unrelated incident, a man was shot about 3 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Avenue X. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby gas station and from there was taken to UAB Hospital.

His injury was not life-threatening and police said no one was in custody in that case.
