MOBILE, Ala. — A woman stole a Mobile Fire-Rescue medic truck Saturday night, then led officers on a chase that ended when shots were fired, authorities confirmed today.
Police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy said police are conducting an “investigation into shots being fired during the chase,” but he declined to elaborate. Findings of the internal investigation are expected to be released later today, he said.
The woman accused of stealing the truck — 40-year-old Josephine Armstead — remained in Mobile County Metro Jail this morning, charged with first-degree theft and attempting to elude police, according to online jail records.
Mobile Fire-Rescue spokesman Steve Huffman said the medic truck was stolen from Forest Street, near Duval Street. Fire medics were responding to a diabetic emergency, Huffman said, when they saw someone drive off with the truck.
Armstead was apprehended on Dauphin Island Parkway, when she ran into a fire hydrant, Huffman said.
The truck was damaged, he said, but will be repaired.
