MOBILE, Alabama — Mobile police have arrested a 19-year-old man and charged him with two counts of murder in the deaths of a couple who were found beaten inside their home in January.

Jakarrey Chambers of Mobile was arrested today in connection with the Jan. 29 beating of Roy and Sherley Ezell, who were found inside their home in the 1200 block of Horton Drive in Mobile, police spokeswoman Ashley Rains said in a news release tonight.

Roy Ezell, 57, was discovered dead after a family member went to the home and asked police to go inside to check on the couple’s welfare. His wife, Sherley Ezell, 59, was found severely beaten, and was taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center. She died there of her injuries on Feb. 14.

During an investigation, Rains said, detectives were able to develop Chambers as a suspect. He was detained today and brought in to Police Headquarters, where he was arrested and charged with murder.

A motive for the slayings was not released tonight. Chambers was being held without bail at the Mobile County Metro Jail. A bond hearing is scheduled for Monday.
