Two people were killed Tuesday night in a fire in at Birmingham Southside apartment building, according to a Birmingham Fire Department official.

Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis said the fire was contained to the apartment where the bodies were discovered in the Building Trades Towers at 2021 10th Avenue South.

There was varying degrees of smoke damage in the building down to the fifth floor, he said. The fire was reported at 9:50 p.m. and Mardis said it took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

Flames were visible from the building when firefighters arrived on the scene, Mardis said. Birmingham police officers helped firefighters evacuate the building.

The cause of the fire is not known and authorities have not released the names of the victims. No other injuries were reported.
