Author: MOBILE, Alabama — A two-story houseboat stuck in Dog River near the bridge is waiting for the tide to roll in, an Alabama Marine Police officer said Tuesday.
A couple moved the houseboat from Louisiana to Mobile with plans to take over operations at a marina on the river, Officer Micah Smith with the Marine Police said.
The house was built on a barge — which has a draft of about 4 feet — and pushed to its new location by a shrimp boat that edged it out of the river’s channel causing it to get stuck, Smith said.
The houseboat — a self-sufficient building sporting solar panels and a rainwater collection system — is creating a few safety concerns for fishermen who launch their boats nearby, said Jim McEnery, who lives in the Dog River area.
“It’s like having a house in your driveway,” McEnery said.
He said that he has a small boat, but fishermen with larger vessels have to take more care when leaving and returning on fishing trips to watch for anchors or lines used to stabilize the structure.
“You just have to use caution,” he said. “You can’t go barreling through there.”
“I kind of feel for the guy,” McEnery said. “I don’t know how he’s going to get it moved.”
“He needs more help. A bigger vessel,” he said.
So far, Marine Police are being patient.
“We’ve given him time to get it out of there,” Smith said, adding that the houseboat wasn’t anchored there on purpose.
Smith said that officials were called last week about the boat being stuck. He said he talked to the owner Sunday afternoon.
No charges have been filed against the owner, Smith said.
