BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Alabama Power officials say 32,000 customers are currently without power throughout the state following this afternoon’s storms.

Michael Sznajderman, Alabama Power spokesman, said there are 14,000 without power in the Birmingham-Jefferson and Shelby County areas. At one point, there were 63,000 in the state without power following afternoon storms that packed winds in excess of 60 miles per hour.

Cities throughout the Birmingham area reported downed trees and powerlines. In eastern Alabama, around Anniston and Gadsden, there are 12,000 customers without power, he said.
