MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama House has given final approval to a bill that would require some people who have been convicted of driving under the influence from being able to start their cars.

The House gave final approval Thursday to a bill that allows judges to require some convicted drunken drivers to have interlocking devices placed on their cars. The driver of the car would have to blow into the device, and if his or her breath registered a .08 blood alcohol level or higher the car would not start.

The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Mike Hill of Columbiana, said Alabama is the only state in the nation that does not require drunken drivers to use some type of interlocking device.
