MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The Alabama Senate has passed two bills designed to protect tax breaks on homes and businesses damaged by the April tornadoes.

The Senate voted 30-0 Tuesday for the bills by Republican Sen. Arthur Orr of Decatur and Democratic Sen. Priscilla Dunn of Bessemer.

Orr’s bill provides that businesses shut down due to tornado damage won’t lose their state tax abatements and tax credits while they are rebuilding. Dunn’s bill provides that homeowners won’t lose their homestead exemption for their property taxes while rebuilding and unable to live in their homes.

The bills still must be passed by the House and signed by the governor to become law.
