MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The Alabama Legislature has decided to toughen the registration requirements for sex offenders when they get out of prison.

The Senate voted 20-0 today to accept changes the House made to a sex offender registration bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Cam Ward of Alabaster. The bill now goes to the governor.

State law has long required sex offenders to register with law enforcement officials, who make their addresses public. Ward said homeless sex offenders “almost never” registered, but his bill requires them to register weekly with law enforcement until they get a permanent address.

His bill also requires sex offenders to supply more information to law enforcement, which will be made public, and it prohibits a sex offender who abused a sibling from moving into a home with that sibling.
