Alabama State Troopers today reported nine people died in crashes this Fourth of July holiday weekend.
That’s down from 13 during the 2010 holiday weekend.
Cpl. Steve Smith said troopers believe alcohol was a factor in the majority of the deadly crashes and more than half of the people killed were not wearing seat belts.
The fatal wrecks included two in Jefferson County and seven others in Baldwin, Dallas, Houston, Limestone, St. Clair, Talladega, and Wilcox counties.
Although the 78-hour Fourth of July holiday travel period ended at midnight Monday, troopers continued an annual holiday blitz — with all available troopers using checkpoints and laser speed details — until midnight tonight.
As of 7:30 p.m., troopers had investigated 350 crashes and written 3,414 tickets for speeding and 1,169 tickets for seat belt/child restraint violations during the three-day holiday weekend.
Troopers also made 148 driving under the influence arrests and assisted 253 drivers.
Overtime pay for troopers was provided by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and the Alabama Department of Transportation.
