Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Justin Brown will step down as Alabama Symphony Orchestra‘s music director and become the orchestra’s music director laureate.

The move will mark the end of Brown’s six seasons as ASO’s music director and principal conductor. As conductor laureate, he will be under contract for two seasons, conducting ASO for four weeks each season. A search committee, chaired by board member Jon Blankenship and comprised of ASO musicians and board members, has been formed to look for a new music director.

The announcement was made Tuesday at the Alys Stephens Center at a meeting of the ASO board of directors.

Brown won the ASO music director position after a two-year search, following the six-year tenure of Richard Westerfield. He began in 2006-07, making strong impressions as a conductor, concerto soloist and chamber musician. His initial four-year contract was renewed for two years in 2010 and expires with the 2011-12 season.
