It’s almost summer — and with summer comes freedom. As we escape our usual mundane responsibilities for the next two and a half months, we are constantly seeking thrills, adventure and excitement. What better way to satisfy our summerly desires than to explore the new attractions at four world-renowned amusement parks that just so happen to be right in our area!

At Six Flags Great Adventure, the true thrill-seekers can prove that they have what it takes to literally stand up to danger on Green Lantern, the brand new coaster. Jumping from the pages of a DC comic book, riders are transformed into Green Lantern superheroes who possess magic power rings of green energy.

It is this energy that penetrates them through more than three-quarters of a mile of horror, including a 153-foot climb, a 45-degree vertical drop, two loops more than 100 feet tall, and a series of double corkscrews. And don’t forget, for the entire duration of the two minutes and 30 seconds, you are standing up.

But, of course, not everyone desires to become a Green Lantern. If you’re not interested in the coaster, head over to the park’s Golden Kingdom and prepare to be awestruck by a world of new and unique safari discoveries. Come face to face with a California seal lion or with exotic baby animals at the safari nursery. And if merely observing is not enough, walk through the “Please Touch Exhibit,” featuring animals such as the spotted skunk and the giant Flemish rabbit!

And the youngsters are especially in luck at Six Flags this year with the addition of the “Safari Kids” area. It not only features the new mind-boggling “Extreme Raptors” bird show, but also various kiddie rides, including the Air Safari plane ride and the Sky Zooma balloon ride.

But we all know that there is nowhere better suited for the youngsters than Sesame Place, and just like Six Flags, this park is filled with all sorts of new attractions for the upcoming summer.

Elmo’s World now features a swing ride, Elmo’s Cloud Chaser, that the entire family can enjoy together. Though not at all frightening, it still generates an adrenaline rush so that riders feel as if they are actually soaring through the sky.

Once you’ve tackled new heights on the Cloud Chaser, make your way over to Sesame Street. You are not going to want to miss the “Neighborhood Street Party,” the newest parade at the park, featuring 11 monstrous floats and a series of classic Sesame tunes for everyone to sing along to! Nighttime parades are now running through Sept. 4 with lighting on the floats so that visitors feel as if they are immersed in a light show.

The parade participants consist of a combination of everyday workers, such as bakers, trash men and postal people, along with a group of well-loved Sesame characters — Elmo, Bert, Ernie, Big Bird, Cookie Monster and many more. Also featured in the parade and brand new to the park in general is Murray, the beloved orange fur ball who stars in the “Word on the Street” segments of the show. Murray will also be roaming the park, eager to chat and take pictures with visitors.

Apart from the Sesame Street gang, another world-famous character loved by all is Charlie Brown’s Snoopy. And in honor of this loveable beagle, Dorney Park has created an entire world for him — Planet Snoopy. New this year to Planet Snoopy are seven awesome rides that everyone is bound to enjoy. Visitors can now journey with the Peanuts crew on the Camp Bus, ride the swings with Charlie on Wind-Up, and so much more.

And as they stroll through the park, Charlie Brown fans will also run into some of their favorite characters, including Linus, Lucy, Charlie and, of course, Snoopy!

In contrast to Dorney, Sesame Place and or Six Flags, Hersheypark decided to focus much of the change for this summer in a different direction. Food-lovers will be extremely pleased to discover that Hershey has opened three new eateries in the park — Hershey Park Place, Spring Creek Smokehouse, and Simply Chocolate. For a sit-down meal in a chipper, family-friendly atmosphere, the Hershey Park Place is probably the best option. From scrumptious burgers and wraps to a variety of chocolate desserts, it satisfies the craving for some quality all-American food.

But if you instead desire an outdoor, waiterless ambiance, enjoy some traditional BBQ at the Spring Creek Smokehouse. Continued…

And although I would say that chocolate has always been abundant throughout the park, it is even more so now with the debut of Simply Chocolate. The shop offers an array of mouth-watering snacks and sweets.

So satisfy your appetite for thrill this summer and venture over to Six Flags Great Adventure, Sesame Place, Dorney Park or Hersheypark. Whether you are taking on a vicious coaster, strolling through exhibits, cheering frantically on the sideline of a parade or enjoying some delicious munchies, you could not possibly be disappointed!
