ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Alabama — A suspicious bag found alongside Interstate 20 this morning turned out to contain three artillery simulators and posed no danger to the public, authorities said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called to assist the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and the Riverside police after a stranded motorist saw what he believed to be explosive devices.

The motorists’ car apparently broke down near mile marker 162 and that’s when he saw a suspicious brown bag and looked inside.

The artillery simulators are used in military training. They make a loud noise but cause little damage.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will destroy the simulators in its own training exercises later this week.

Today’s investigation into the possible bombs prompted Alabama State Troopers to shut down parts of the interstate, but traffic has returned to normal.
