DOTHAN, Alabama — Alabama Fire Marshal Edward Paul says that despite dry weather, there are no changes to the state’s fireworks policy this year.

Paul points out that Alabama remains under a no-burn policy, with a ban on all outdoor burning. He says fireworks are a cause of fires, along with barbecuing and cigarettes, and officials are asking that people exercise common sense.

Paul says people need to be prepared to extinguish a small fire if one starts, and should have a water supply nearby. He says fireworks should be purchased from licensed dealers, and that residents should be aware of illegal fireworks.

Meanwhile, various local jurisdictions across the state have issued statements and advisories about fireworks. Here’s a sampling from newspaper reports across the state:

Scottsboro: The city of Scottsboro has a fireworks ban in effect, but there is no ban in unincorporated parts of Jackson County, according to The Daily Sentinel.

Pell City: The use of fireworks remains legal despite the statewide no-burn order, though officials warn people to be extra careful because of dry weather conditions, the Daily Home of Talladega reports.

Leeds: The Jefferson County town banned the use of fireworks because of dry weather conditions, according to the Daily Home.

Covington County: Grilling and fireworks still OK, though caution urged, according to the Andalusia Star-News.

Athens: Limestone County has been downgraded to fire alert status, meaning the sale and use of fireworks is permitted, though caution is urged, according to the Athens News Courier.

Atmore: Residents will be able to celebrate the Fourth with fireworks, but fire officials are warning everyone to be careful with fireworks through the continuing drought, according to the Atmore Advance.
