MOBILE, Alabama — A 14-year-old bicyclist run over by a garbage truck on Thursday remained in critical condition today, according to officials with the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile.

Daniel DiNardi was riding home from a summer-school program when he was struck shortly after noon Thursday by a Waste Management garbage truck at the intersection of Baldwin County highways 13 and 64.

The triple-axle truck’s rear tires rolled over and crushed much of the boy’s body. Immediately afterward, he was conscious, Daphne police Capt. Danny Bell said.

A new Facebook page appeared late Thursday that is devoted to a “prayer chain” for the teen. The page states that DiNardi is “fighting for his life” after suffering “head trauma, a shattered pelvis, lacerated liver, ruptured spleen, and is on a respirator.”

Terry Wilhite, Baldwin County Public Schools spokesman, said the boy is a Daphne Middle School student.

Efforts to contact DiNardi’s family were unsuccessful Friday.
