DOTHAN, Alabama — A portion of the Alabama National Guard stationed at the Third Avenue Armory in Dothan is being inactivated and soldiers are being moved to other armories.

The Headquarters Support Company of the 1203rd Engineer Battalion will inactivate formally Aug. 31 as part of an Army-wide reduction of Engineer Battalion headquarters. The 55 soldiers in the battalion will be moved to armories throughout the Southeast.

The Alabama Army National Guard has 183 units with about 11,400 soldiers and 2,300 airmen.

Officials say the Dothan armory will continue to be used for training and be available to the community.

The Dothan unit was established in 1955. It has been deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in the last few years.
