ST. PETERSBURG, Florida — Authorities say a federal fugitive from Birmingham was fatally shot this evening in St. Petersburg after he pulled a gun on a team of officers trying to arrest him.
The U.S. Marshal’s Service reports that the man, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was wanted for violating his federal supervised release on a sex offense.
Officials say a fugitive task force made of several deputy U.S. marshals and two Tampa police officers went to arrest the man at his garage apartment Thursday evening. When the man pulled out a weapon, authorities say two marshals and a police officer opened fire.
The St. Petersburg Fire Department reports that paramedics pronounced the fugitive dead at the scene.
A marshal suffered minor injuries during the encounter.
