BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Hundreds of music lovers turned out at downtown’s Railroad Park today to hear jazz and raise money for victims of the April 27 tornado.
More than 25 local jazz musicians participated in a free jazz concert dubbed “Pickin’ up the Pieces,” to raise money and supplies for tornado victims.
The event was organized by Magic City Smooth Jazz. It began at 10 a.m. and ended about 9 p.m. Waldrep, Stewart and Kendrick Attorneys at Law sponsored the event. Bernard Lockhart, executive director of Magic City Smooth Jazz, estimated about 2,500 jazz lovers were in the park about 6 p.m.
Lockhart said local jazz musicians had inquired about doing something to benefit tornado victims.
Lockhart said he sent out an email and all the jazz musicians he contacted agreed to participate.
“I didn’t get anyone that said no to this project,” he said.
The concert audience donated at least four Salvation Army bins of cleaning supplies, while others texted $10 donations to the American Red Cross.
