BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — The Metro Birmingham Branch NAACP will honor several area leaders today during its Annual Salute to Great Men of Faith.
The event will be at 6 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 1133 Tuscaloosa Ave. SW. Birmingham City Council President Roderick Royal will be the guest speaker.
Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper will be named Man of the Year.
Other awards will go to Col. Stone Johnson, Lifetime Achievement, Civil Rights; Rev. Jonathan McPherson Sr., Lifetime Achievement, Civil Rights and Religious Affairs; and Rev. Raymond Whitsey, pastor of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Supporter of the Year.
Great Men of Faith honorees are: the Rev. Brian K. Blackwell, St. Luke AME, North Birmingham; the Rev. G. Larry Pettaway, evangelist, First Missionary Baptist Church, Pratt City; the Rev. Major W. Burell, Peace Missionary Baptist Church, Pratt City; Bishop Theo Bailey, Christ Temple Deliverance Church; the Rev. Dennis E. Brock, Mt. Zion Community Church, Evergreen; the Rev. George P. Hill Sr., Trinity CME Church, Pratt City; and the Rev. Joe Louis Moore, Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Goldwire.
Outstanding Community Service honorees are: Anthony “Pete” Stone, Foot Soldier Barber Legacy Keeper; Harry Brown, senior vice president community planning and initiatives, United Way of Central Alabama; Frank J. Matthews, civic activist; Dave Donnell, account manager/radio personality, Cox Media Group; Ron January, operations manager, WATV 900; and Clarence Ford Sr., president, North Pratt Neighborhood Association.
