BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — The Birmingham Police Department has identified a man shot to death by police Tuesday as Henry Lee Williams, 39, of Birmingham.
The incident occurred about 4:38 p.m. on Tuesday in the 700 block of 1st Street South.
Police said South Precinct officers were alerted by citizens that a robbery was in progress near there. Officers saw the suspect with a handgun chasing a robbery victim on foot.
The officers chased the suspect on foot.
“After reaching the incident location, officers encountered the suspect. The encounter ended with the officer discharging his weapon on the armed suspect, resulting in the suspect’s death,” police said in a news release.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident. The Birmingham Police Department Internal Affairs Unit will also conduct an investigation.
Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said today that evidence collected indicates police acted appropriately in the shooting.
“We were extremely fortunate that we didn’t lose an officer to this armed assailant,” Roper said.
