Helen Marchman graduated from Birmingham-Southern College this morning. Her next stop is Disney World — but the music voice major is going there to get a job.

 ”I plan to audition for Disney World or Disney Cruises,” the graduate said, shortly before she marched in to start Commencement.

The Florence native was one of 338 undergraduates and 32 graduate students receiving degrees in the outdoor ceremony at Lake Park. Birmingham-Southern graduates are pursuing varied jobs and graduate programs.

Truman Scholar Katie Glenn plans a career in public service, beginning with a summer fellowship in Washington at the Department of Health and Human Services. Mary Catherine McAnnally has signed up with Teach For America, a two-year stint to help school children in a low-income area of Alabama. Josh Crowe, a music composition major, is headed west, to find work in the Los Angeles film industry.

Commencement speaker Susan Hagen, professor of English at Birmingham-Southern, offered simple advice for the graduates to take with them.

“When there is an option,” she said, “always choose joy over sullenness.”
