BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — City Mayor William Bell urged Birmingham residents to register with FEMA before the June 27 deadline and to sign forms that allow the city to clean up private property.

Bell, speaking in Pratt City Thursday morning, reminded residents to register before the deadline in four days. “We have only a short window of opportunity to sign up for FEMA help and relief,” Bell said.
There is also a pressing need to get right-of-entry forms from property owners in tornado-ravaged areas. Bell held his press conference in front of two lots the city had cleared with permission. Beside them were rubble strewn lots where the city didn’t have permission to go as of yet.

The federal and state governments pick up most of the cost of debris removal, so the city wants to get as much cleared as quickly as possible.
