BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Judy Casey, a teacher and reading coach at North Birmingham Elementary School, and Ida Lewis, a grandmother who often volunteers at the school, met a few years ago and started a lasting friendship.
Casey is white and Lewis is black.
The two women and their friendship were among those honored Friday at the Birmingham Urban League’s Multi-Racial Friendship Luncheon.
The event, held at the Harbert Center, seeks to recognize people who maintain friends with a person or people from other racial or ethnic backgrounds.
Also recognized were:
Jefferson County Commissioner Sandra Little Brown and Commissioner David Carrington. Little Brown is a Democrat and Carrington is a Republican. The two developed a friendship after gaining positions on the current commission.
Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood and AT&T Regional Director in Mobile Gigi Armbrecht. The pair met while serving with civic groups in the Mobile area.
Lauren Thompson and Wyteria Huffman. The two women met while in a training program on the job at the Social Security Administration. They soon discovered that that they had a lot in common and developed a friendship, the women said in a video presented at the event.
