BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Birmingham police, state wildlife officials and officials from the Birmingham Zoo are trying to capture a black bear spotted tonight in the South Roebuck neighborhood.
A woman driving on Roebuck Boulevard saw the bear in a field about 5:30 this evening, police said. Two East Precinct officers called to the scene saw the bear standing in the field.
In efforts to track the bear, Birmingham police have brought out a K-9 unit, Birmingham firefighters are using a thermal imaging camera and officials are searching from the air using a Jefferson County helicopter. Police believe they have the bear surrounded and will attempt to tranquilize it.
This is the second bear spotted running at large in Birmingham this month. A black bear was captured in Ensley less than three weeks ago and taken to the Birmingham Zoo.
