CHILTON COUNTY, Alabama — The Chilton County Sheriff’s office has released the identities of the two boaters who died on the Coosa River late Tuesday.

The two men, John L. Tice Jr. of Montgomery and Jason P. Thomas of Marbury, were on a fishing trip with Thomas’ 14-year-old son when their boat began to take on water and eventually capsized late Tuesday evening.

Thomas’ son managed to stay alive by grabbing a piece of concrete sticking out of the water and holding onto it for six hours until he was rescued by a group of boaters passing by the next morning.

Divers located the bodies in the water, Tice at 10:35 a.m. and Thomas at 12:08 p.m.,  just below the Mitchell Dam on Wednesday. Alabama Power Company confirmed that no turbines were running while the men were fishing until the bodies were found.   Authorities also found the boat floating upside down in the water.
