Hollywood star and wild man Charlie Sheen visited Tuscaloosa Monday to see the tornado damage, talk with the mayor, visit survivors, handout flashlights, urge others to help and promise he might return to raise money, Birmingham News writer Don Kausler reported.

Sheen is a controversial figure with his sexual escapades, drug abuse, media grandstanding, and TV and movie appearances. Some of our online community weren’t impressed  with his bad-boy history or his Tuscaloosa visit. But many spoke highly of his efforts and wished him well. Read some of what the community is saying:

• “I know God works in mysterious ways, but it will take time to understand his master plan. One day we’ll understand why he sent this storm. Hopefully it will serve to bring more to Jesus. In the meantime all we get is Charlie Sheen.” JclovesAU

• “The article needs to add that he spent over 3,000 at Best Buy on batteries, flash lights, etc. I think it’s awesome that anyone, no matter who they are, chooses to spend their time and money to help the victims here in Alabama. Where are the celebrities who gave to Katrina survivers.. and to Haiti? There are many more communitities in Alabama that desperately need help. Where are the celebrities who call Alabama home? We need help from any source available. Today it was Charlie Sheen. From all I’ve heard, those who met him today they said he and his girlfriend were very nice, kind people. Not arrogant at all. • “Maybe Charlie’s motive for coming to Alabama was to improve his image. Maybe he truly feels that he is all powerful and by just being here with his “Cadre” and tiger blood he can make everything right again. Regardless of the reason, I do not think that he could leave our state without being humbled and unchanged. Hopefully experiencing REAL life will bring him to his senses. I really think that he will try to bring help to Alabama and hopefully others from Hollywood will follow his example.” — redsoxgal
