The Legislature is considering a bill that would let state agency heads give workers unpaid furloughs to save money. Pretty much everyone has to agree that our state budgets are in dire straits and it would seem that furloughs might save some jobs.
Is there something going on among Alabama state employees that leads them to hold a hard line against allowing furloughs? They argue it’s a pay cut — which, of course, it is — but is the alternative of layoffs better?
The Legislature is also taking a hard look at teacher tenure. Some portray the issue as guaranteed jobs running amok, while others say tenure is sometimes the only thing that keeps politics out of the education system.
