What does it mean when more than 2,500 people gather in Linn Park to quietly protest Alabama’s new immigration law? It means there is plenty about the law a lot of people don’t like.

There is, indeed, much to be bothered about, argue the interfaith groups that sponsored the Linn Park march Saturday night. One controversial provision makes it illegal to give an undocumented person a ride. Like in: to church, or to the hospital or a doctor, or to the store. It’s also a crime to let that person stay overnight in your house.

Most of the bill’s provisions go into effect in September, but there are going to be legal challenges — and there should be.

Meanwhile, even the Birmingham City Council is preparing to pass a resolution opposing the law, understandable considering the city’s troubling history in race relations.

You can telll us what you think about the Linn Park protest, the immigration law and whether the Birmingham City Council should even get involved in the issue during a live chat with Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer Joey Kennedy today at 1 p.m.
