For the 18th year in a row, the Annual Cherokee Indian Festival hosted by the Southeastern Cherokee Confederacy of Pennsylvania will be held at the Temple University’s Ambler campus. The festivities will occur during Memorial Day weekend from noon to dusk for each day of the festival.

“All three days have the same focus, so everyone will be able to see what we have to offer, on May 28, 29 and 30,” said Chief Buffy “Red Feather” Brown.

She promises a great festival that will have everyone entertained and educated on the history of the Cherokee. Many traditional aspects of Cherokee life will be put on full display for the public’s viewing.

“Along with our traditional dances and festivities, this year we will also have a re-enactment of the Trail of Tears,” Brown remarked. “This will be performed by members of our tribe.”

Clad in gorgeous spiritual and traditional dress, the dancers will perform multiple dances.

“There will be traditional dances, as well as dance contests. These include women’s traditional, men’s traditional, women’s fancy, men’s fancy, women’s jingle; all of them are traditional dances that will be shown at the festival.” These dances will occur throughout the weekend.

Entertainers include M.C. Wayne Cave, Spirit Wing Singers, the Black Horse Butte Singers, as well as the White Buffalo Singers.

Children will be in for a treat this year, as the festival will include many attractions for kids.

“We have face-painting for the children, the round band and traditional dances for the children to participate in, as well as other children’s activities,” Red Feather said.

To complement the culturally rich ceremonies, there will be delicious traditional Native American food.

“We will be having two Cherokee food vendors at the festival this year, very large food stands with buffalo and all different types of Native American foods will be served all three days.”

All proceeds will go towards the Native American College Scholarship Fund, which has helped Native Americans afford to go to college and further their education through scholarships.

Since it is Memorial Day Weekend, the Cherokee tribe will be performing an honorary dance for the veterans in attendance and in honor of all veterans of our wars. Continued…

“To honor the veterans of all of our wars, we will invite them into a circle and perform an honor dance for them,” she said.

With a multitude of great festivities planned, this year’s 19th Annual Cherokee Festival promises to be a blast for all members of the family and all age groups.
