SARALAND, Alabama — A 22-month-old boy was hospitalized today after a near drowning in the family swimming pool in Saraland, police said.
The child, who was not identified, was taken first to Springhill Medical Center and later transferred to University of South Alabama Children & Women’s Hospital, police spokesman Sgt. Leroy Smith said.
The hospital did not release an update on the the child’s condition Tuesday evening.
Police were alerted about 11:20 a.m. to the situation at a home in the 800 block of Deer Run Drive in Saraland’s far north end, Smith said. He said officers and fire rescuers arriving at the home found the child unresponsive.
Smith said police believe a family pet may have jumped up on the back door of the home and pushed the door open, allowing the child access to the pool.
