CHILTON COUNTY, Alabama — Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis, speaking during a press conference this afternoon, said there is no known motive behind a shooting that left an 11-year-old boy dead and his 15-year-old brother in stable condition.

The boy’s mother, Ann Marie Campbell, 34, of Clanton, has been charged with murder and attempted murder, Davis said.

Davis said he has never had to investigate a case of a mother accused of killing her own child.  “Our hearts are saddened … We all have kids,” Davis said. “We can’t grasp how this took place.”

A statement on the sheriff’s webpage provided an account of the incident:

Chilton County E911 Center at 10 a.m. received a call of a shooting in the 3000 block of County Road 69 near Clanton. Davis told reporters he did not know who placed the call.

The sheriff’s office, Enterprise Fire & Rescue, and RPS Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene and found the two injured children. Their names have not been released.

Campbell was still on the scene and was arrested without incident, the sheriff reported.

“It is with heavy heart that I have to report the following events that took place within our great county today,” Davis wrote on the sheriff’s office webpage. “Please pray for this family and all the other emergency personnel that has been impacted today.”

Campbell has a daughter, Davis said, but it was not clear if she was present at the time of the shooting.

Davis said authorities have spoken to the boys’ father and step-mother.

Campbell has been arrested before, but Davis said he did not know on what charge. A mugshot posted of her on the department’s webpage bears the date Dec. 9, 2010.

A judge had ruled on Wednesday that Campbell was to be evicted from the property where the shooting occurred, according to court records.
