A 70-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife of 50 years, Thomasville police said.
Investigator William C. McNair II identified the suspect as Johnnie McKinley, who was in Clarke County Jail Wednesday night. Bail was set at $75,000.
Thomasville police had been called to make a welfare check at the home at 1622 Tallahatta Springs Road on Sunday afternoon. Officers found the body of 71-year-old Shirley McKinley in a bedroom at around 4:30 p.m. McNair said she had been shot with a shotgun.
McNair said her husband was not at the home when police arrived. Police found Johnnie McKinley at a Thomasville apartment complex later in the day and detained him.
McNair said McKinley confessed after being served with a warrant for murder.
McNair said police had been called twice recently to the home to investigate domestic trouble, but in each instance internal reports were written with no charges being filed.
McNair said the incident was the first murder case handled by Thomasville police in 14 years. The McKinley home is outside the city limits but in the city’s police jurisdiction, McNair said.
