About 100 people gathered in Southside Baptist Church tonight, a week after the April 27 tornadoes, to pray and hear the known names of the dead read aloud.

The somber hour-long service, organized by churches and synagogues in the Five Points South area, featured candles lit to remember the dead, prayers sung by Jewish cantors, a gospel solo of “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” sung by Ricky Powell, and readings from scripture.

“God’s in the midst of all our suffering and pain,” said Southside Baptist Pastor Steve Jones.

Nearly all the names of the 245 dead in Alabama were read aloud by clergy, based on a list published on al.com. Not all of the dead have been identified, and Jones noted that the list was subject to change as it was updated with new names.

“Their lives were taken so suddenly, and their loved ones were left to grieve,” said the Rev. Conrad Sharps, pastor of Independent Presbyterian Church.

“Our ray of hope is in God,” said the Rev. Paul Costopoulos, dean of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Holy Trinity-Holy Cross. “We must continue to be God’s people and pray.”
