Birmingham’s big post-tornado clean-up job is yet to begin. Mayor William Bell and the City Council met again Saturday for two hours to talk about burning, recycling and hauling, and whether to contract with private companies or let the Army Corps of Engineers take charged. No agreements were reached, despite Gov. Robert Bentley’s warning that the city needs to end the delays, Birmingham News writer Joseph Bryant reports.
The council’s continuing delays don’t appear to be sitting any better with the online community than they are with the governor. Read some of what the commenters are saying:
• “‘Their task is to manage this debris in the most efficient and the more environmentally responsible way possible,’.
‘The only way this will happen is for the mayor and the city council to stay as far away as possible and let someone who knows what they’re doing handle it. The Army Corps of Engineers don’t work by the hour. Let them ‘GET ER DONE’.” — psonmyx
• “The sniping between Bell and some on the council is the result of the disagreement over what companies or agency should get the work, and the contracts worth millions.”
Are you kidding me? Review the contracts and award the lowest bidder who can get the work done. Period. — bhamfornow
• “Sickening and Pathetic excuse for human beings. They are all positioning for payoffs in my view. Three weeks? Still no consensus? I have an idea, lets pay the companies the first 10 million dollar installment to haul off the “debris known as Birmingham City Council and Birmingham Mayor”. That should adequately clear the debris field so that the rest of us can get down to actually taking care of business.” AmazedAgainToo
• “nobottomfeeder…..your wish for better leadership in Birmingham is my wish also but over the past 3 decades the voters don’t include in their requirements, people with good leadership quality. Their first priority is “what can you do for me”.” DonaldDunlap
• “I did not vote for William Bell, but I have tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. As I have followed his response to the April 27th tornado, I can now say I am not optimistic about this city’s future. How Birmingham recovers from this tragedy will show what our “leaders” are made of and so far it’s not looking good. The citizens of Birmingham affected by the tornado are SUFFERING and they don’t need to be put on hold while Bell and his buddies calculate the benefits they can reap. Clean up the mess NOW! Our Governor has reprimanded Bell and the Council and so should the people. These potential contracts to Bell’s old cronies are suspect indeed. Let the ACOE do what they do best and let’s see if Walter Maddox will move to Birmingham in a few years and run for Mayor. He’s done an outstanding job in Tuscalooosa.” — elmoandbella
