VESTAVIA HILLS, Alabama — Mayor Alberto “Butch” Zaragoza announced Monday night he has selected Dan Rary to be the city’s new police chief.
Rary has served as acting chief since early January when former Chief Butch Wilson retired.
The Jefferson County Personnel Board recommended 13 candidates, but city officials are pleased with Rary, who has instituted several initiatives in his short time as acting chief. These include establishing a full-time narcotics investigation unit, a K-9 unit and an Internet crimes against children unit. “I think Danny has shown to myself, his staff and the council since January that he has done an outstanding job of turning the police department around,” the mayor said.
Rary said, “I want to promise you I’ll give 100 percent to do the best job I can,” Rary said.
Rary will supervise about 70 officers.
