CENTER POINT, Alabama — Firefighters are trying to determine what sparked a blaze in Center Point today that killed a man and woman.

“They are in the house now,” Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. John Mayes said of investigators. “They got it cool enough to go in.”

A neighbor called authorities about 11:40 a.m. to report flames coming from the home at 405 21st Avenue N.E. “It was fully engulfed when we got there,” Mayes said.

Firefighters found a male in the foyer of the home. He was pulled to the outside, where he was pronounced dead. Once the blaze was extinguished, they found the body of a woman in the back bedroom.

Jefferson County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Randy Christian said the two fatalities are believed to be a husband and wife, ages 62 and 56.

Authorities said the couple lived at the home with another man and woman who were out shopping at the time. The victims had been homeless at one point, and had been living with the surviving couple for about two years.

Investigators have not yet confirmed what started the fire, but said trash and garbage was piled in the back yard and the inside of the home was extremely cluttered.

The victims’ names haven’t been released pending confirmation of their identities. The female was burned beyond recognition, Mayes said.

The blaze is now under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
