HOUSTON COUNTY, Alabama — A man was shot multiple times at a traffic checkpoint in Houston County today about 3 p.m. after hitting one deputy and attempting to run over others, according to Sheriff Andy Hughes.

Deputies were operating a checkpoint for licenses, registration and insurance, when the suspect overheard that warrants were held for his arrest. He ran his car into Deputy Rob Johnson, according to WTVY. As the suspect steered toward others, deputies opened fire, hitting the suspect multiple times, Hughes said.

Hughes believes the suspect was seriously injured. Both the suspect and Johnson were taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center for treatment.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
