Two states in New England have dropped laws that directly, or indirectly, governed driver license renewals for older drivers.
New Hampshire no longer requires a road test and vision test before renewing licenses for drivers age 75 or older.
Connecticut had a law, although it was never funded, that required periodic vision screening for all license renewals. Not any more, though.
Money was the reason for dumping these requirements to save a chunk of change for cash-strapped state governments.
Do you think older drivers should be retested to show they are still able to safely operate a vehicle? Alabama doesn’t. You could be asked to re-take a vision test, but it’s not a requirement.
Join Birmingham News columnist Ginny MacDonald for a live chat to talk about older drivers, younger drivers and drivers in general as well as other road and traffic issues on Monday at 1 p.m.
