BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A steady stream of food-filled postal vans backed up to a warehouse Saturday, giving a Community Food Bank of Central Alabama official hope that donations to its largest drive did not drop because of last month’s deadly tornadoes.
 
  The annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign, run by the National Association of Letter Carriers, is key to helping the food bank get through the summer, when demand for food assistance is the greatest, officials say.
 
  In 2010, local Stamp Out Hunger campaign donations had risen to 160,000 pounds, an increase of 72 percent since 2007 and 9 percent from the year before, said Mike Fuller, the warehouse manager at the community food bank.
 
  “We may be a little lower this year,” he said Saturday evening, as donations still were being delivered. “But the pace picked up this evening, so we may be all right.”
 
  Food bank officials were concerned last week that people would be less likely to give to the Stamp Out Hunger campaign, in which postal carriers pick up food donations along their routes, because they already had cleared their cabinets to donate to tornado victims.
 
  Leslie Green, one of the carriers dropping off donations Saturday, said he thought his collections this year were lighter than in previous years.
 
  “But we’ll probably be picking up bags (of donated food) all week,” he said.
 
  People needing help from the Community Food Bank should call the 211 helpline of the United Way of Central Alabama for a referral.
