A recent McAdory High School graduate who drowned Sunday while swimming in the Warrior River has been identified as Austin Raney.
The body of the 19-year-old was recovered Monday morning, about a mile from Quinn’s Landing around 9 a.m. , said Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe. Raney was spending the day on the river with his father and other friends and family, authorities said. He jumped from a ledge near the Smith Camp boat launch and hit his head before hitting water.
His brother called 911 about 6:30 p.m. to report his brother was drowning. At the time of the call, he had been under water for about five minutes, said Jefferson County sheriff’s Sgt. Jack Self.
Deputies and rescue workers responded. They searched for the victim, but suspended the search at dark.
Self said the drowning happened in Walker County and the case was being handled by the Alabama Marine Police and the Walker County Sheriff’s Office. The Hoover Police Department dive team is assisted in the search.
