MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Elmore County resident Loryn Brown has been confirmed as one of the 254 deaths resulting from the deadly April 27, 2011 tornado outbreaks. Brown, 21, died in her Tuscaloosa home when the EF5 tornado slammed into the area, all while on live TV.
WSFA spoke to the Edgewood Academy graduate’s mother, Ashley Mims, on Friday, where she spoke about the last few moments of the Shelton State Community College student’s life. Mims was on the phone with her daughter the moment the mile-wide tornado hit her Tuscaloosa home.
“She said mom I’m scared. I said it’s OK,” Mims told WSFA. “The phone went dead. I knew at that moment she was dead.”
According to the Wetumpka Herald, Brown’s father and Ardmore High School head football coach Shannon Brown, went to Tuscaloosa after the storms cleared. He found his daughter’s body buried in the rubble of her flattened home.
Brown is the third Edgewood Academy student to die in 13 months, according to the newspaper report.
Brown’s family is working to establish a scholarship fund in her honor.
