FAIRFIELD, Alabama — The Fairfield City Council voted Monday night to pay about $17,000 to ClasTran through the remainder of the current fiscal year.

The council agreed to pay ClasTran about $3,446 a month through September as part of the city’s obligation to the service. The initial payment will cover the city’s obligation for May and be deducted from the city’s bingo account.

Councilman Ronald Strothers, head of the council’s finance committee, said the city will find money each month to meet its obligations to the service.

Fenn Church, ClasTran executive director, said Fairfield officials are the first to contact the organization about saving routes in their city. ClasTran makes about 21 trips a day in Fairfield, he said.

Officials with the nonprofit transit service for the elderly and disabled have said they will slash routes in Birmingham and other areas within weeks without a needed $121,500.

ClasTran has notified riders that it will discontinue 10 routes serving 231 daily riders on June 13. The agency was once funded by the county, but in recent years has relied on heavily on the city of Birmingham for support. ClasTran has 42 routes.
