FAIRFIELD, Alabama — The Fairfield City Council held the first reading Monday night on a proposed ordinance that will toughen the way the city deals with abandoned and neglected properties.

The ordinance will target abandoned houses and properties with overgrown grass and weeds, District Two councilman Primus Mack said.

It will also allow city crews to access properties for cleanup and in some cases, the city will have the option of purchasing the property, Mack said.

The council will take up the measure again when it meets in a called meeting Wednesday night.

In other action, Mayor Kenneth Coachman recognized the police, fire and street and sanitation departments for their roles in neighboring Pleasant Grove following the April 27 tornado. Coachman has also scheduled a town hall meeting for July 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jerry D. Coleman Community Center.
