FAIRFIELD, Alabama — The Fairfield Board of Education voted tonight not to renew the contracts of 10 teachers and support staff.
Interim superintendent Frieda Bush said the non-renewals are the result of a loss in state funding. The system does not have enough in local funds to keep the positions open, she said.
The Fairfield City School system has seen its enrollment drop in recent years.
The state calculates how much money to send to school systems based on the number of students enrolled the previous September.
In other action, the board voted to send a letter to state school Superintendent Joe Morton, the Alabama High School Athletic Association and others asking that exit exam testing not take place on the same week as the state boys and girls basketball tournament.
Board vice-president John Cox said he has been concerned with what he deems a conflict of students taking the test the same week as the basketball tournament.
