MAPLESVILLE, Alabama — A Maplesville man who died in a plane crash on a training mission in Florida to prepare for overseas combat in 1944 was honored during a memorial service 67 years after his death in the Banana River, according to The Clanton Advertiser.
Walter Cobern had just finished Navy flight school a month before he died. The service was held on Saturday at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. Cobern’s body nor the plane were never found, though the Navy sent his family his personal items and a letter from the president. There was also no funeral or ceremony due to the circumstances, the report says.
