MOBILE, Alabama — Fire destroyed an unattached 2-car garage at 8030 Docena Drive this afternoon, according to the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department. No one was injured.

MFRD spokesman Steve Huffman said the owner’s son had been welding in the garage and, once finished, left to go shopping. About 15 minutes laer, the owner discovered smoke coming from an open door of the single-story cinder block garage.

The owner and a neighbor tried to douse the fire with a garden hose, but it spread too quickly, and by the time firefighters arrived, the garage was fully ablaze, Huffman said.

Welding sparks or hot embers falling into nearby combustibles started the fire, Huffman said. He added that an older pickup truck, lawn equipment and gasoline in the garage  contributed to the fire spreading. Damage was estimated at $17,500.

A total of 5 MFRD units, as well as units from the Theodore-Tillmans’ Corner Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the alarm, which was called in abut 1:40 p.m.

Docena Drive is north of Three Notch road and west of Schillinger Road.
