Fire destroyed two adjacent vacant houses in East Lake on Sunday.
Birmingham firefighters were called in at 2:03 p.m. to put out the blaze in the 6500 block of Second Avenue South. It was brought under control at 2:33 p.m., a dispatcher said.
No injuries were reported.
Although the two houses were empty, the fire threatened to spread to a nearby lived-in duplex, said Mickey Martin, chief of Birmingham’s battalion three.
“We were able to protect the occupied building,” he said.
The firefighters had to battle the blaze and 100-degree summer heat, Martin said. About 40 personnel came out with 10 fire engines and other equipment.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
